Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy

Muscles in the pelvis provide support for organs such as the bladder, colon and uterus. They also help the body perform functions such as urination and bowel movements. Muscles that are damaged, too weak or too tight can cause problems in several important activities.

As a result, many women experience difficulties such as:

  • Leakage of urine or stool
  • Frequent or difficulty with urination
  • Pelvic or abdominal pain
  • Pain with intercourse
  • Post-partum changes
  • Constipation

Research shows at least 25% of women have difficulty using pelvic floor muscles as needed. And up to 15% of women aged 18-50 experience pelvic muscle pain. Although these symptoms are more prevalent in women, men still experience issues associated with pelvic floor dysfunction.

How pelvic floor physical therapy can help

Physical therapists can evaluate and treat the causes of many of the difficulties including:

  • Muscle weakness or tightness
  • Joint dysfunction
  • Nerve entrapment

Pelvic floor physical therapists (PTs) have special training in pelvic health. They can identify the possible causes of pelvic problems and develop treatment plans targeting the muscles and pelvic areas to address specific conditions. In some cases, physical therapy may provide an alternative to surgery.

PTs use several different techniques to treat pelvic concerns. These include biofeedback, electrical stimulation, behavioral training, exercises and manual therapy.

What to expect

All pelvic floor physical therapy at UMMC is offered in a private treatment room to ensure a patient’s peace and comfort. At the first visit, a patient will meet with the pelvic floor PT for a complete evaluation to determine a personal approach to treatment.

First, the PT will complete a thorough history of symptoms and medical conditions. Then, the therapist will evaluate a patient’s posture, strength and flexibility. If deemed necessary, an internal pelvic exam will be performed to determine the impact these muscles may have on your symptoms.

Finally, the PT will recommend a treatment plan that typically includes one-hour sessions weekly for 6-8 weeks. Each patient’s privacy and personal comfort will always be considered when determining a treatment plan. Most health insurance policies include coverage for physical therapy.
